A good example of a commemorative goblet celebrating the construction of what was the largest single span bridge in the world over the River Wear at Sunderland. Strictly speaking the actual bridge being celebrated was the Wearmouth Bridge even though these glasses frequently have the legend as engraved on this glass of SUNDERLAND BRIDGE. The bridge was completed in 1796 and brought prosperity to the local area. The bridge attracted visitors and these glasses were made chiefly as souvenirs.
