This sweet, rare, antique original is the smallest size Tete bebe made by Emile Jumeau circa 1880s. Highly sought after, she will sit right in the palm of your hand! You will be amazed! She is near perfect and retains so much originality! She would be a superb addition to your family and will make you smile with delight as you arrange her in vignettes. Wouldn’t she look darling being held in the arms of another favorite in your collection?
There are few small versions of French bisque dolls that can compete with the quality of artistry right along side their larger cohorts. But as you see in the pictures, a talented, steady hand, practiced and skilled, lovingly applied the strokes to create this miniature masterpiece. Fine lashes, lovely arched brows and delicately accented lips comprise her inquisitive expression. Her chocolate brown, rayed, paperweight eyes hold the mysteries of her past and reflect that she was one of the earlier produced. Later versions had jointed wrists and red stamp labels. .
Near mint, with just the tiniest “in the making” rim line and professionally treated earring hole flakes, she has survived intact for the last 130 or more years. The original neck button, eye set, and beautiful original light blond mohair wig (which still has a little nail through it attaching it to the cork pate) add to her rarity. The little wig has the signature “Jumeau medallion” seen on the inner side of the wig cap, showing Jumeau’s method of applying the hand wefted locks of mohair. She is incised with a number 1 on the back of her neck and has the artist’s signature initial L in dark china paint.
Her tiny, jointed composition body is stamped with the early blue Jumeau stamp low on the back of her torso and is in excellent condition with the early straight wrists and all original finish with no repairs, flaking or chipping to speak of. Please note all photos of this darling body.
Our little Bebe is presented in her antique burgundy silk satin French drop-waist style dress trimmed in fine lace and closed with hooks and thread loops. It appears to have been reworked at some time so I cannot say how old it is, but her little chapeau is newer made with antique silk satin, matching silk flower and feather. The fine cummerbund is of silk georgette. Her plain pantaloons may be original, as they have been gathered and tied with a drawstring for many a decade. Her fancy eyelet slip peeks out from under her hemline. Rare antique striped burgundy and white knit wool stockings come up to her knees and her paper thin unmarked leather shoes look to be original.
