My favorite bear, Tillie, can’t wait to show you what she found in my trunk today! Ready? “OK, Tillie, open the basket.” … “Awww! Did you find a little baby? How darling she is!”

Presented in an cute antique footed wicker sewing basket with loop and stick closure (6.5” L X 4.25”W X 7” tall with lid standing open), is an adorable German bisque baby doll, peg jointed at shoulders and hips with no markings. Your guess is as good as mine as to her maker. The 50-year dealer that was her previous owner suggested that she may be a Hertwig. She proves to be a mysterious dichotomy in that her little face has the most beautifully painted features with fine, two stroke brows, blue irises with darker rims, precisely tapered upper lid lines, the red lid crease detail, and a hungry open mouth into which her bottle fits while at the same time, the limbs of the doll are roughly prepared bisque showing some scratches and tool marks. Nevertheless, the toes, knees, elbows and the backs of the hands have been lightly blushed, and the molded hair is dusted a light golden blond. Her arm turns up to exactly place her bottle into her waiting mouth. I have never seen such a well painted little all bisque baby of 4.25 inches!

Someone has lovingly and painstakingly created a layette for this little one, consisting of her diaper, bonnet, long slip, christening gown and a sterling silver “Baby” cup and spoon. Constructed by a skilled hand, there are rows of tiny feather stitching and fine laces. The closure of the dress is a tiny mother-of-pearl button with handmade buttonhole and even the slip has a matching button and loop. Look at the precious little lace on her bonnet that fits her head snugly.

Oh my goodness! I just found that the blue pillow she was tied to with a silk ribbon was just a false bottom or the lid to a hidden compartment underneath filled with more clothing, toys and an antique glazed porcelain chamber pot that says in gold, “After you, my Dear”. I was never told about this fantastic surprise so perhaps the previous person I purchased her from never knew either!

Just look at the pictures! I just had to try everything on her and take pictures of the tiny little embroidered flowers and feather stitching on her pink flannel gown and the little blue day dress. Her bitty stuffed white rabbit is all of 1” long with an outfit of pink and blue velvet and a lace collar! In addition I found her rattle and teething ring.

Just think what fun you’ll have adding some booties and a bib, maybe a blanket and a sweater set? And what about a baby carriage or a cradle? Let your imagination run and spoil your new baby! Oh yes, you could find a comb and brush too!

Thanks for letting my bear, Tillie, share her surprise find today! Things like this don’t show up too often! Please email with any questions or for more photos if you like.
