I have never had the privilege of owning both an XI and an X at the same time before. Take a look at this doll’s sister, the XI, in my trunk as well. Seldom found, is this early, circa 1880, 15 inch little girl shown relaxing on a Sunday afternoon reading on the porch. She has kicked off her shoes, and is all snuggled up with her kitty.

BISQUE HEAD: Her sweet, demure expression is skillfully wrought with low arching brows, finely painted short lashes and pursed mouth with darker accent line between the lips. The excellent bisque is without damage or repairs, so lovely and translucent with pretty blushed cheeks and an X incised on the back by the rim. Her clear blue eyes are in their original set with well-done lid wax touchup and work smoothly. Noticeable only with her later, pretty, blond mohair wig and pate removed, is slight warpage to the bisque, which commonly happened in the kiln firing during manufacture. This did not concern the maker because there are no cracks or splits, or they would not have completed the beautifully detailed features of her face, but I mention it as full disclosure.

BODY: She retains her original early ball jointed body with the typical separate ball joints at the shoulders and attached balls at the hips, knees and elbows and primarily original shiny finish with some matched touch ups at the hip and knee joint areas and a few spots at the neck. Over all, it is in excellent condition, holding a pose well.

CLOTHING: A soft, candy pink antique frock, hand sewn of light weight cotton or linen brocade has more recently been trimmed with a pattern of applied lace to the front that appears in the shape of an apron. Short puffy sleeves are edged with gathered lace, as is the neck. Three tiny handmade buttonholes and glass buttons close the dress in back. Her fine batiste petticoat skirt is accordion pleated to a waistband closed with a button and buttonhole as well. She is missing pantaloons, which I am sure her new owner would be happy to find her. Vintage cotton knit stockings go up to her knees but sadly, her dog has disappeared with her shoes.
