The reason why it was chosen was due to its flat surfaces which were perfect for inscriptions. The writing set is in the form of a large stylized scallop shell. It is very pretty and well executed with an inkwell, and the other container with perforation for the substance used for blotting, and an area shaped like a shell for resting pens. The molded design made of red pottery and painted over in red glaze, using black highlights over the ornamental designs. The covers and containers are removable from the set.
