Once upon a time, this huge blue glaze brazier/hibachi helped keep many Japanese warm and snug in their tatami mat rooms. The kilowatts of heat it delivered could not be measured but it could certainly hold a large quantity of charcoals. The hibachi has a low round shape with a flat rim that measures 4 inches. The flambe glaze on this pot is spectacular. It appears in streaks of turquoise and purple over the dark color glaze. The condition is excellent...

It is a known fact that this shop whose name is on the raised four character seal found on the bottom of the pot exported large glazed braziers to Japan. The large size has the capacity of holding more coals and could warm a room quickly. How it re-appeared in South China where it was purchased is a good mystery. Whatever journey it made, it is a very handsome brazier. The potter must have in mind an archaic bronze drum, and he used many of the elements on this brazier...

The art of making objects using strips of bamboo has existed long before written history in China. Bamboo is just the most practical natural object around. Objects both utilitarian and decorative are made out of weaving bamboo strips together. When I discovered this object at a market in Southern China, I first thought of it as a hat - a huge sun shade, worn by farmers and peasants all over China. The handle under the conical side was a mystery and its heavy weight ended this speculation...

Water Dropper in Bird Form This water dropper is very “shibui” in the way it was made. It is a rather abstract presentation of a bird, flattened in form, and feels very comfortable to use. The thumb and middle finger grab the dropper on the “wings” and the index finger rests on the crested head. When droplets are required, the index finger moves to the back to control the air hole. The presentation is very unpretentious, nothing is forced...

Blue and White Water Dropper in the form of a bottle with a stopper This is an unusual shape for a Japanese suitaki. The form is more like a European ink bottle. The stopper functions as the dropper and the bottle the water coupe. The feature that is most interesting is the continuous narrative painting on the surface of the bottle. It depicts four fisherman dressed in rain gear and large conical shaped hats pulling a fishing boat. The theme of the painting is like a Bunjinga painting which...

The teapot is a fine representation of the revival of the artistic tradition of Yixing at the turn of the 20 century. Its simplicity of form facilitates the literati tradition of poetic inscription on one side of the pot, and an illustration of bird and flower painting on the other. The teapot was commissioned by one of the better known shops in Shanghai - Tiehuaxuan (they are still in business today) in the second half of the 19 century to the Republican Period. The potter's name is Jinch...
