Pair of Black Compound Cabinets
New Price: $3,800.00

Pair of Black Lacquer Compound Cabinets The large standing wardrobe, or armoire, remains, even in modern times, the piece de resistance of Chinese household furniture. Such wardrobes almost invariably come in pairs, often placed side by side or symmetrically along one wall, with perhaps a door in between, or opposite each other across a room. A complete set consists of four pieces: two large cupboards, set on the floor, and on top of them a further pair of ting kuei or "top cupboards" also called mao kuei, or "hat cupboards" because they were used to contain headwear above the clothing kept in the main pieces. When placed together, these constitute virtually the foundation of any Chinese installation; this is true - except for the throne itself- even in apartments of the Forbidden City, where examples reach mammoth size. Antique compound cabinets, and their esteemed place in the genre of Chinese furniture are not readily available in the market place. People from prominent social classes who managed to survive the Cultural Revolution without giving up their heirloom furniture, will never part with their cabinets. And those noveau riche who wish to carve a niche in society would want to own a pair to booster their own social standing. Provenance: Manchuria, Northeastern China Date: late 18 to early 19 century Dimensions: 45W x 21D x 89H (each) Original List Price: $14,400
