Yixing Zisha Round Teapot - dated 1915

This simple round shape teapot modeled after an archaic bronze bell is in itself a simple red pottery object made in the Yixing kilns in the early 20th century. But it is magnificent and significant a historical document in the form of a teapot. It is important for the following reasons:

1. The teapot is a dated document 1915, the fourth year after the birth of the Republic of China. 2. It also documented that the Yixing kilns were in production, making teapots in large numbers to be sold in the Chinese Pavilion in the Panama Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco in 1915. 3. It is an important souvenir of the Panama Exposition. Tea and teapots probably were very popular items sold in the exposition. 4. Rarely is a Yixing teapot inscribed in the English language. Evidently the inscribers were not accustomed nor comfortable with the English language. The spacing of each word were uneven, but endearing in a way. The sentence reads "FOR PANAMA EXPOSITION REPUBLIC OF CHINA EXHIBITS 1915.

The teapot is made of dense red Yixing clay, which was very typical of the period. The cover, spout and handle were done very well. The interior is clean and never been used and for those interested, there are 7 holes leading to the spout. The teapot has two seals. The one under the cover is a two character impressed mark, the name of the potter. On the bottom is a shop mark commonly used during the beginning of the 20 century.

Condition: The teapot is 97 years old, and has been well cared for. The overall condition is excellent. There are tiny flaws around the rim, and two minor chips. The cover is in good shape on the top, but the bottom rim was chipped all around (check last image.)

Dimensions: 17cm long, 10cm wide and 9cm high.
