"He is covered with stars, ribbons and medals, more like a Prince of the Opera than the Conqueror of the Nile. It is really melancholy to see a brave and good man, who has deserved well of his country, cutting so pitiful a figure." This was written by General Sir John Moore upon receiving this painting of his friend and fellow defender of England, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. He had ordered the tondo version from Leonardo Guzzardi, painter of the full-length one now in London's National Portrait...

Excavated near Filadelfia, Costa Rico, this impressive vase is in the striking Nicoya Polychrome style. Applied to one side of the bulbous tripod body is the head of an animal, probably a jaguar or coatimundi, resting on its forearms. A band of hieroglyphs encircles the vase's collar and other designs run around the legs and in a ribbon down the back. Excellent unbroken condition, with some wear to the buff paint of the body, but with all motifs intact. Approximately 11 inches tall and 10-1/2 in...

Finely wrought of steel and ebony, this handsome and rare "manche-a-gigot" would allow the carver-at-table to hold steady a leg-of-lamb. (This problem of service unfortunately led to the rolled-and-tied boneless -- and less succulent -- cut of lamb served at tables nowadays. And alas, no meaty bone for next-day's Scotch broth!) French, Second Empire, circa third quarter of the Nineteenth Century, approximately seven inches long.

I love the three-dimensional effect of this pure-silver ice bucket, a tribute to the genius of Japanese metal smiths. Bamboo-form trim is so exquisitely detailed as to seem almost detachable; in places it actually stands free! Probably an Imperial commission, the monogram and crest of the French Pretender, Albert-Louis de Bourbon, rises in high relief from the shimmering martele ground – superb! The main body of the bucket is approximately five inches high and 5-1/4 inches in diameter at t...

When I found this giant beauty more than half-a-century ago in the window of a Manhattan antiques shop it was holding a vase of daisies. The clerk explained that it had a cover and offered me a discount. It was the largest piece of treen I had seen (it still is) and I dragged it back to my cubicle in the Madison Avenue advertising agency for which I worked. That evening, I lugged it up to my one-room flat and checked out the wood in F Lewis Hinckley’s "Directory of the Historic Cabinet Woods",...
