Weighing an impressive 24-1/2 pounds Troy, this five-piece tea and coffee service is stately but reserved. Made under the aegis of London's Goldsmiths' and Silversmiths' Company, all pieces bear sterling hallmarks for London, 1934, with a fifth, purely voluntary mark, the profiled heads of King George V and Queen Mary, paying tribute to the Jubilee Year. "He is covered with stars, ribbons and medals, more like a Prince of the Opera than the Conqueror of the Nile. It is really melancholy to see a brave and good man, who has deserved well of his country, cutting so pitiful a figure." This was written by General Sir John Moore upon receiving this painting of his friend and fellow defender of England, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. He had ordered the tondo version from Leonardo Guzzardi, painter of the full-length one now in London's National Portrait...

When I found this giant beauty more than half-a-century ago in the window of a Manhattan antiques shop it was holding a vase of daisies. The clerk explained that it had a cover and offered me a discount. It was the largest piece of treen I had seen (it still is) and I dragged it back to my cubicle in the Madison Avenue advertising agency for which I worked. That evening, I lugged it up to my one-room flat and checked out the wood in F Lewis Hinckley’s "Directory of the Historic Cabinet Woods",...

Dramatically handsome is this miniature tansu, designed to hold dolls' clothes for the celebration of Girls Day in Japan. Covered on all sides in Korean-style marquetry of various woods -- red ash, persimmon, ebony – in a crazy-quilt jumble of stylized fans, game boards and geometric devices, highlighted with silvered mounts. The two doors portray an inset scene of a rooster and hen with their chicks surrounded by summer flowers, masterfully executed in raised lacquer, a tribute to domestic...

Following the forced opening of Japan to world trade in the mid-Nineteenth Century, there was a great rush by the Western Hemisphere to enjoy the goods of this graceful and productive land. There was also a great curiosity on both sides to portray and understand the customs and effects of the foreigners. One of the products of this venture is the famous and delightful Black Ship Scroll, now owned by the Japan Society. Related to that document is this series of paintings depicting how a man ...

Here is a glorious tribute to summer’s warm beauty that will chase the winter blues from any room. By noted French flower painter, Raoul Victor Maurice Maucherat de Longpre, it portrays a freshly gathered bouquet of poppies, daisies, bachelor’s buttons and Queen Anne’s lace gracefully lying on a stone wall, the sort of still-life that the artist was famous for all of his career, which began at the Salon de Paris in 1876. The painting, in watercolor and gouache, is in superb conditi...

If this powerful figure,a fish with two riders, had a utilitarian purpose, it would have been as a handle for a needle-like point fitted into the mouth area. This is unlikely, however, as the two figures would impede ease of use. Siberia-Alaska Area (?)pre-Christian Era. Approximately 8-1/2 inches in length, 2-3/4 inches high and one inch deep.

“Hark, the herald angels sing!” I have always imagined that the missing hands of this finely carved German High Renaissance archangel originally must have held a missile. The marks of age have not destroyed the magnificence of the statue’s graceful, liquid form and, fortunately, the beatific face retains its youthful radience. Traces of the original gesso and gilding remain and the piece has been stabilized by the addition of a heavy, old marble plinth. It is in healthy condition and m...

The finest Etruscan bronzes I have owned in 50 years of collecting, this extraordinarily pair of belt hooks are in the form of Lasa, the winged “angel” attendant of Turan, the Etruscan equivalent of Aphrodite, goddess of love, particularly appropriate for this time of year. Dressed in a full-length chiton, the goddess presses her right hand to her heart and raised her left in the age-old sign of testament. Ram’s heads are at her feet and another above her head, its tongue protruding to f...
