Classically elegant is this very large (approximately 19-1/2 inches by 15 inches by nine inches high)Wedgwood foot bath in finely molded creamware. With a large impressed WEDGWOOD mark and the impressed mark CBD, which I interpret to indicate an 1875 manufacture, it is decorated with a border of laurel leaves enameled in turquoise, the same shade used to highlight the scallop-shell handles and encircling borders. A simple dotted border is enameled in pale olive...

Bearing the incised mark, “Schramberg 2”, this exceptional 16-1/2 inch German charger, decorated entirely in grisaille transfers, was made around 1825 to rival the wares of France’s Creil and Montereau factories, which in turn flourished after Napoleon breeched the flood of English creamware that Louis XVI had let into France, therefore putting some 10,000 potters there out of work. Surrounded by borders of grapevines is a highly detailed scene of Zurich, circa 1800...

“Hark, the herald angels sing!” I have always imagined that this German High Renaissance figure of an archangel originally must have held a music book in his missing hands. Even in its deteriorated state, there is a magnificence to the statue’s graceful, liquid form, and fortunately, there is no damage to the carving of the handsome, beatific face. Traces of the original gesso and gilding remain and the piece has been stabilized by the addition of a heavy old marble base...
