A finely detailed and hefty snuffbox in the Louis XVI-Empire style decorated on all surfaces with classical designs of lambriquins, fronds, flambeaux and a pair of shields among leafy borders and imbricated panels. On the bottom there is engraved in the central lozenge "MA" in probably contemporaneous script with added above and below it in light Roman letters Presented to" and "By S...

A delightful Louis XVI tortoiseshell etui with pique-d'argent inlays in the form of classical festoons and stars. On either side is an oval lozenge , one of which bears the initials "LAW." Originally, it would have held a pair of dainty scissors of some other personal conceit, but now could serve as a pillbox or matchbox. The condition is superb, with only a minute separation on one side where the tortoiseshell meets...

Made more for whimsy than for actual use, this folding set of bone implements must have given some sailor hours of creative amusement. The tapered body, decorated on both sides with color-filled bull'-eyes, encloses a fingernail scraper, an awl and a pretty deadly ear cleaner. The bottom has a rounded notch and the business end is crudely shaped to resemble a whale or walrus. American, circa 1800 to 1825. Cf.: McManus "A Treasury of American Scrimshaw" (Penguin Studio), p. 140...

A charming set of five sterling silver teaspoons skillfully crafted by a silversmith or jeweler without a mould for elaborate flatware. Each of the spoons, initialed "PBT" in script and dated "'92" through "'96," are bright-cut engraved with designs to suggest anthemion-crested cast ware. The stem above the bowl is torque-twisted. Marked only "925 sterling 1000." Mint condition. Each approximately 6 inches long. See Trocadero Item #13651 for a similar butter knife.

Esthetic Movement butter knife of simple, elegant shape, its only decoration being bright-cut engraving, the top made to resemble anthemion-topped moulded flatware, and a japonesque diagonal-banded design with a spray of marsh flowers on the blade. Tall and glamorous, this finely crafted glass overlay vase is a real tour de force. The underlying white glass layer lends a varied luster to the turquoise blue, rather like ancient Persian glazes. The tall-necked baluster form of the piece and the intricate palmate and dotted designs enameled on the surface, echo this appeal to Orientalism. There is a hallmark that I have not deciphered, a script letter "A" in an artist's palette. English or Continental, circa 1880...

You might have seen an identical pair of these on the BBC "Antiques Roadshow" a few seasons ago. The expert was viewing a woman's lifelong collection of scissors and scissor-like implements, and these he would not let out his hands! (I wonder if she got them back?) They really are fascinating: you open the chamber to receive the burnt wick, and when you close it, a guillotine rises up and chops off the used part, thus containing it and the acrid smoke...

This is one of two versions of this Enoch Wood (English, 1759 to 1840) bust of the Immortal Bard that we have on hand. (See Trocadero Item #14831) It is amazing what a difference the enameling can make! This model is cloaked in bright leafy green that contrasts nicely with his rather more matte yellow shirt and marbleized plinth. His hair and beard are red and he has eyebrows that would make Joan Crawford sick with envy. English, circa 1800. Mint condition...

One of two versions of the this bust of William Shakespeare that we possess (see Trocadero Item #14819) by Enoch Wood (1759 to 1840). In this one he is a brunet with a tan and gray cloak, a rather florid complexion and a gilt locket at his throat. Molded into his back is "Shakespere," I guess so we shouldn't mistake him for Vincent Price. Superb condition with some crackling to the skin tones. English, circa 1800. Approximately 8-1/2 inches high by six inches wide by 3-1/2 inches deep.

An exceptionally fine piece of Dutch East Indian metalwork is this large, handsomely shaped and engraved punch bowl made for the European market. The outer surfaces have a fine, polished golden color, while the interior and bottom have the patina of old bronze. Over much of the outside are designs of trails of foliage, diaper patterns and stylized leaves on a punched ground. It is in very fine condition, and measures approximately 8-1/2 inches in diameter and 3-1/2 inches high...

A rare example of High Renaissance metal craft is this small oval platter, hand repousséd brass with a heavy coating of silver which was then carefully polished to simulate the real thing, all this in a time when labor was cheap and silver the main expression of status. The central scene is chinoiserie, an oriental court tableau of a potentate and his consort being serenaded by a standing figure playing an enormous trumpet...

Rather like something out of "The Last Days of Pompeii" is this wonderful sterling silver tripod tazza, with its Neo-Classical and Psuedo-Renaissance elements combined in great style. Attached chains and pinecones hang between a collar below and a pierced one above with ginko leaves. There is an exquisite monogram very much in the style of the tazza. Gorham Manufacturing Company, date mark for 1870. Superb condition. Approximately 5-1/4 inches high by 6-1/2 inches in diameter.

Detailing of jugs of this sort is rarely so fine, but here the artist has attempted life-like shading and veining on the flowers and leaves that adorn both sides of this piece. The whole of the bulbous body is lavish with copper luster, which covers the finely molded rim of grapevines, the fluted lip and the graceful handle. Superb condition. English, circa 1830. Well, we’ve all heard of pink elephants, and some of us have seen a few, but here is a charming couple of other rosy critters. Flanking this handsome, generous copper luster jug are a pink luster spotted dog and a champion pink luster sheep, both in very high relief. Between them, under the jug’s lip, is displayed a scrolly-legged epergne overflowing with wildly colored flowers. The copper top and bottom sections offer bold contrast to the blue ground of the central frieze...

This is a fine, heavyweight cast sterling silver tripod salver in elegant George II style, its gadrooned border in strongly detailed English rococo curves and shells. The central field is emblazoned with contemporary crested and festooned arms; the feet are in finely crafted Spanish style. Made in London in 1765 to 1766, and weighing approximately 17 ounces, it bears the hallmark of Thomas Hannam and John Crouch (or John Carter). During the Age of Opulence that followed the Civil War, Gorham Manufacturing Company often produced silver that exemplified the over-the-top taste of the day, a mad clash of historical styles that could often fit together somehow. Here, however, is a lovely sterling silver compote in pure classical design, and with a date-mark of 1873. Aside from the upwardly sweeping elegance of the reverse trumpet base and the generous flat bowl, the only design elements are simple fillets, the uppermost bou...

Here is an excellent example of Georgian handicraft: a penwork stationery box of simple black and gilt borders surrounding transfer scenes of a stately building, a fantasy London, a village and a holiday market square. In very fine, aged condition, it retains its original gilt fittings, its well-preserved wallpaper lining, even its original key. It is only a shame that the billets doux it no doubt harbored are no longer contained within. English, circa 1810. Approximately 6-1/4 inches by 10 ...
