Stately and subtle, this tall vase exemplifies the virtues that have made Oribe stoneware favored by Japanese tea ceremonial connoisseurs and others for centuries. The soaring form and intentionally coarse surface make a monolithic background for the underglaze iron-oxide designs of weathered pinetrees on one side and the cavelike scene of "hanging persimmons" suspended from a slanted double border of latticework on the other...

This highly decorative shallow bowl, a major product of the Seto kilns, depicts the encounter of a beautiful and elegant Japanese woman and fierce-looking bearded man with some sort of evil intent in mind. Oh, you know the story... Well, frankly I don't, but if I find out, I will write it in. Anyhow, the whole thing is illustrated in elaborate colored enamels and gilt on the finely potted body with a crackled glaze...

An intricate fabric printing block from northern India handcarved from rosewood in a design of repeated stylized flowers and borders. This snowy bowl always remind me of Christmas: the deer on the hill beneath the pine boughs seem to looking skyward for a star. The blue underglaze designs are intricate, but very soft and only confined to a central trellis-like medallion and a border on the bottom; it is relieved by bold red enamel rectangles and turquoise-surrounded roundels of phoenixes. The gilding is lavish yet restrained. Japan, circa 1860. Excellent condition...

Here is a magnificent charger which balances bold authority with delicate detail. Around a central medallion of the Three Friends -- pine, prunus and bamboo -- in gilt-highlighted underglaze blue with red-touched border are panels of deep blue and lustrous gilding alternating with lively scenes of flowers and rocks visited by butterflies and phoenixes, symbolizing good fortune. This finely crafted Indonesian betel nut box is the finest I have ever come across. The strapwork decorated body is in clearest white paktong, an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc much favored as a tarnish-free silver substitute by British silversmiths in the Eighteenth Century. There are three compartments inside for the betelnuts and the lime and betel leaves necessary for chewing them. Indonesian, Nineteenth Century. A sturdy little coffer for storing and heating betel nuts and the lime necessary for chewing them, this fine brass work, approximately 5-1/4 inches by 2-1/2 inches by two inches high, is nicely punched and engraved with designs of trailing foliage and geometric patterns. Raised framing has been filed to suggest rope-work.. It is easy to see how this form influenced the design of early Dutch tobacco boxes. Carved in precious jade to imitate an almost-unattainable early Chinese bronze ho (covered tripod pot), this fine detailed piece is supported on three elephant-head legs. Dating from around 1875, this fine porcelain brush vase retains its Communist Government seal on the bottom, releasing for sale as antique. Gold-highlighted enamels depict a young man scaling a wall and pushing away willow branches to interrupt two ladies playing checkers in a garden, probably a scene from a popular play. The piece is approximately 4-3/4 inches tall and three inches in diameter, and is in pristine condition, with only normal wear to the gilding.
