This group is so Etruscan that I am certain they are German. The prints are elaborately framed in ebonized wood with gilt mounts and chains, but the extraordinary thing is the laurel-bedecked verre eglomise (painted and gilded glass) mats. They are in superb condition, the full set is about 31-3/4 inches high and 39 inches wide. The larger piece is 16 inches by 39 inches and each of the other two is 13 inches by 19 inches. Approximately 1840.

Very much in the George II style and incorporating a silver coin of that king’s reign in its silver bowl is this extraordinary sauce ladle, perhaps made to fit into a service of earlier manufacture. The handle is chased and engraved in a rococo chinoiserie manner, with fronds and flowers and an oriental parasol finial. The bowl is repousséd with panels of flowers and a shield...

Very much in the Chinese Export style is this early Nineteenth Century porcelain plate from the Davenport factory. The pure white ground is highlighted by colorful bunches of flowers, and a gilded lambrequin border echoes the gilded rim. The marks are a script “Davenport” and an inventory number, “162.” Mint condition, approximately nine inches in diameter.

Classical simplicity is exemplified in this large and elegant cup by Tiffany & Company. The softly textured straight sides rise from a border of laurel leaves in strong relief and are capped by a pearled rim. A sweeping monogram in interlaced script reads, I think, “ELT.” Hallmarks indicating purity at “Eng(lish) Sterling 925-1000” and “G & W” for directors Grosjean & Woodward date the piece to 1854-55. This urn-shaped coquilla nut pounce pot combines fine turning with delicate designs formed by small machine-turned repetitions of varying sorts to produce rosettes, festoons, etc. with a dramatic effect. Possibly English or Continental, maybe scrimshaw of Napoleonic prison-of-war art, it is hard to pinpoint exactly where it was made, but wherever, it was certainly well thought out. Early Nineteenth Century. Mint condition. Approximately 2-5/8 inches high and 1-3/4 inches in diameter.

Elegant in its simplicity is this Scottish carpet bowling ball of lustrous lignum vitae. This example is Nineteenth Century, manufactured in Glasgow by R. G. Lawrie and approved by the Scottish Carpet Bowling Association. It is approximately 3-3/4 inches in diameter and is decorated with six inlaid plugs of ivory.

This finely crafted Indonesian betel nut box is the finest I have ever come across. The strapwork decorated body is in clearest white paktong, an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc much favored as a tarnish-free silver substitute by British silversmiths in the Eighteenth Century. There are three compartments inside for the betelnuts and the lime and betel leaves necessary for chewing them. Indonesian, Nineteenth Century. Gargantuan in scale, this handsome item, marked simply “Ironstone China,” is the only one like it I have ever seen. The octagonal shape and heavy base would seem to rule out use as a drinking mug, so maybe it served for warming or cooling a bottle. Boldly decorated in “Imari” style patterns of dark blue, iron-rust red and light blue, highlighted with copper luster and a bright green handle, it is truly impressive, English, circa 1820.
