This finely executed provincial Korean byobu (floor screen) has been professionally remounted in two parts. The tranquil scene of poets enjoying a tea ceremony surrounded by attendants in a peaceful pavilion is executed in suitably muted tones highlighted by firm reds and subtle gilt details. Korea, Seventeenth/Eighteenth Century, Yi Dynasty, each of the two screens is approximately 37-1/2 inches high and 50 inches wide. (Please note: New, larger pictures have been added.)

An inspired and humorous sculpture by noted contemporary sports artist Jenness Cortez, this little dude radiates vitality. The cold-painted colors on the bronze bring it even more to life. In pristine condition, it measures approximately five inches by 3-5/8 inches by 8-1/4 inches high, exclusive of its 3/4-inch marble base and is number 27 of an edition of 50, with Cortez's signature and copyright mark and date 1986. Tally-ho!

“Hark, the herald angels sing!” I have always imagined that the missing hands of this finely carved German High Renaissance archangel originally must have held a missile. The marks of age have not destroyed the magnificence of the statue’s graceful, liquid form and, fortunately, the beatific face retains its youthful radience. Traces of the original gesso and gilding remain and the piece has been stabilized by the addition of a heavy, old marble plinth...

Here is a glorious tribute to summer’s warm beauty that will chase the winter blues from any room. By noted French flower painter, Raoul Victor Maurice Maucherat de Longpre, it portrays a freshly gathered bouquet of poppies, daisies, bachelor’s buttons and Queen Anne’s lace gracefully lying on a stone wall, the sort of still-life that the artist was famous for all of his career, which began at the Salon de Paris in 1876...

This coat of arms is particularly well painted in full colors and gilded highlights. Retaining its original gilt frame and hanging ring is this late Eighteenth Century watercolor and gouache hatchment, an armorial rendering used at a nobleman’s funeral in place of actual armaments. The grain and barrels depicted on this one suggest that they signified a “beer baron," a major new branch of the rich and honored of the early Machine Age...

CHURCHILL, Alfred Vance, "114th Street Elevated" (so inscribed on reverse), oil on artist board, approximately six inches by eight inches, 13 inches by 17 inches framed. Undoubtedly the most popular disciple of Buddha for artistic portrayal was the Japanese monk Daruma, most likely because his extreme devotion lent itself easily to ludicrous interpretation. Here, however, is a more eerie aspect of the legend: the reappearance of the aesthete some years after his death when he was seen in the western mountains of China, to whom he had introduced Zen Buddhism, traveling towards India, barefoot with one sandal in his right hand...

A real woodcarving tour de force is this Art Nouveau fantasy vase, depicting a snail shell held up by ferns, the sort of thing found in majolica and silver quite often in the latter Nineteenth Century. Were it carved of a plain piece of wood it would still be a triumph, but it was formed from an elaborately pieced together parquetry of several different and contrasting woods: boxwood, ebony, etc. British or Continental, with a few chips out here and there...

Now retired from painting, Micheline Rodolphe Rousseau, was the nom- de-brosse of a witty and charming Frenchwoman who delighted us for years with her scenes of France of the Belle Epoch. It is almost as if she said, "Reality, don't enter here!" This is one of her best, the gathering of a group of fin-de-siecle "sportifs" at a cycle shop, a common sight before bikes and tires were made stronger...

This oil on artist's board, by noted American Impressionist Adolf Berson, portrays a winter day in Montmartre, with two figures walking down the hill between low buildings and fences, the famous windmill of la Galette rising in the background. Signed in lower right corner "Berson." It is inscribed on the back, "Moulin de la Gallette (sic), Paris Snow, 1926." It is in excellent original condition...

WOODAHL, Francis (1938 to 1984) "Prairie Morn," tempera on board. Picturing in very fine detail a wonderfully peaceful scene: a young squaw is bathing in a stream with tepees in the central background, behind which rise verdant hills and a snow-capped mountain range. A moment in Paradise! And a fine opportunity to obtain a work by this distinguished Western artist. Approximately 10 by 12 inches, Barbizon frame. Cf: "Contemporary Western Artists," 1982 (Bonanza)
