Purchased over fifty years ago at San Francisco’s taste emporium Gump’s, these massive lamps in the form of reticulated covered urns light up three ways: inside, above or the two in combination. The bodies have a pattern of prunus trees against bamboo leaves. Grand in scale, they are approximately 38 inches in full height and have a wingspan of about 28 inches; the Chinese porcelain urns themselves are around 28 inches tall and 16 inches in diameter...

The pride of the 1930's Matson Line was the luxury Liner "Lurline" (named for the Matsons' daughter). These cabinets, removed when the craft was renovated as a troop ship in 1942,came from the saloon of the ship and are fashioned of walnut and maple, with finely carved boxwood panels on each door. Measuring about 30 inches by 14 inches by 31-1/2 high they provide excellent lock-up storage with two shelves inside.

Highly detailed and finely finished, these heavily gilded tiebacks are excellent in detail and execution. They are heavy in construction and could even be used as door handles. The reticulated cage of laurels forming the central boss reveal the gilding below, each element detachable for the other for cleaning. French, early Twentieth Century. Approximately 4-3/4 inches in length, 2/12 inches in diameter.

It is cunning how Chinese porcelain artists were able to copy the hand of foreign chinoiserie porcelain painters. Only the clarity of the white body suggested that it is in fact Chinese, not English or French. About 11-1/2 inches high, it is about 7-1/2 inches in full diameter and, aside for being drilled underneath for wiring, is in excellent shape. Included with the vase is its custom-made and fitted flash-gilt brass base.
