This elegant tripod incense burner in fine Kutani porcelain is cylindrical in form and has cloud-form handles with detached rings. The straight-sided walls are reticulated to show the double-wall construction, both sides showing a fortuitous phoenix alighting on a fence. The top is a reticulated double dome. Brilliant glazes of rouge-de-fer, turquoise, blue and mustard are enhanced with fine gilding. Height is approximately four inches and full diameter about 4-1/2 inches...

A lacy bronze candle stand from a Japanese alter has been wired as a table lamp. The metalwork is if excellent quality and has a fine, dark patina. Early Meiji Era, circa 1865. In superb condition, with no repairs, the stand is approximately 20 inches tall, height to top of harp is 41-1/2 inches.

A sturdy little coffer for storing and heating betel nuts and the lime necessary for chewing them, this fine brass work, approximately 5-1/4 inches by 2-1/2 inches by two inches high, is nicely punched and engraved with designs of trailing foliage and geometric patterns. Raised framing has been filed to suggest rope-work.. It is easy to see how this form influenced the design of early Dutch tobacco boxes. The two metal inside dividers are missing, but the piece retains its push button lock...

This finely crafted Indonesian betel nut box is the finest I have ever come across. The strapwork decorated body is in clearest white paktong, an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc much favored as a tarnish-free silver substitute by British silversmiths in the Eighteenth Century. There are three compartments inside for the betelnuts and the lime and betel leaves necessary for chewing them. Indonesian, Nineteenth Century. This exceptional pair of figures depicts the Buddhist lions (shishi or foo dogs) that represent the male and female principle of balance and protect sacred places. In exceptionally hard black granite they are carved in fine detail, he with the brocade ball beneath his front paw, she with a puppy beneath hers. Similar pieces from the treasure junk Tek Sing were recently sold at auction. Chinese, late Eighteenth to early Nineteenth Centuries...

Here is a magnificent charger which balances bold authority with delicate detail. Around a central medallion of the Three Friends -- pine, prunus and bamboo -- in gilt-highlighted underglaze blue with red-touched border are panels of deep blue and lustrous gilding alternating with lively scenes of flowers and rocks visited by butterflies and phoenixes, symbolizing good fortune. The back is decorated with underglaze blue Buddhist horns and cloud-surrounded red and gilt cartouches...

This stately pair of steeds of an unusually large size until recently graced the tomb of a Chinese dignitary of the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. to 220 A.D.) Despite their great age they are in wonderful original condition, their slip-painted details mostly intact...

This a beautifully designed bowl that features a central roundel of a ladies tending to the cocoons of silkworms after they have been treated for unwinding. Behind the scene are arranged two overlapping squares rather like piece of silk, one gold with cranes flying over the sea, the other a diaper pattern of deep green and red emamel, both bordered with enamel black. Peaceful hills with trees and buildings surround with enamels of green, pale aubergine and soft yellow...

This snowy bowl always remind me of Christmas: the deer on the hill beneath the pine boughs seem to looking skyward for a star. The blue underglaze designs are intricate, but very soft and only confined to a central trellis-like medallion and a border on the bottom; it is relieved by bold red enamel rectangles and turquoise-surrounded roundels of phoenixes. The gilding is lavish yet restrained. Japan, circa 1860. Excellent condition...
