The emblem of a Roman matron's social standing, the fibula was the circle pin of its day, and one to be handed down from mother to eldest daughter. In fact, one of the touching things to me is the sign of wear on the back of the piece. This bold example combines Roman solidarity with motifs associated with the Egyptian goddess Hathor. There is fine dark-green patina over all; the pin, almost always missing, has been skillfully replaced with a replica. Approximately 2-3/4 by 3 inches...

WOODAHL, Francis (1938 to 1984) "Prairie Morn," tempera on board. Picturing in very fine detail a wonderfully peaceful scene: a young squaw is bathing in a stream with tepees in the central background, behind which rise verdant hills and a snow-capped mountain range. A moment in Paradise! And a fine opportunity to obtain a work by this distinguished Western artist. Approximately 10 by 12 inches, Barbizon frame. Cf: "Contemporary Western Artists," 1982 (Bonanza)

Picasso made wonderful toys for his children out of found objects; this one by a Native American probably would have delighted him. Fashioned from the jawbone of a caribou and baleen (whalebone}, it is delightfully sculptural. Some wear to the lower points, naturally, but no cracks or breaks. Probably around 1900-1920. Approximately 14-1/2 inches long by 4-1/2 inches wide in largest point.

One wouldn't expect an Austian to know what a Mexican tamale is, but here is a schnappes flask imitating one in porcelain! The "Austria" mark would indicate a time shortly after 1891. Condition mint. Approximately 6-3/4 inches in length by two inches in diameter.

Stately and subtle, this tall vase exemplifies the virtues that have made Oribe stoneware favored by Japanese tea ceremonial connoisseurs and others for centuries. The soaring form and intentionally coarse surface make a monolithic background for the underglaze iron-oxide designs of weathered pinetrees on one side and the cavelike scene of "hanging persimmons" suspended from a slanted double border of latticework on the other...

A finely detailed and hefty snuffbox in the Louis XVI-Empire style decorated on all surfaces with classical designs of lambriquins, fronds, flambeaux and a pair of shields among leafy borders and imbricated panels. On the bottom there is engraved in the central lozenge "MA" in probably contemporaneous script with added above and below it in light Roman letters Presented to" and "By S...

A delightful Louis XVI tortoiseshell etui with pique-d'argent inlays in the form of classical festoons and stars. On either side is an oval lozenge , one of which bears the initials "LAW." Originally, it would have held a pair of dainty scissors of some other personal conceit, but now could serve as a pillbox or matchbox. The condition is superb, with only a minute separation on one side where the tortoiseshell meets...

Made more for whimsy than for actual use, this folding set of bone implements must have given some sailor hours of creative amusement. The tapered body, decorated on both sides with color-filled bull'-eyes, encloses a fingernail scraper, an awl and a pretty deadly ear cleaner. The bottom has a rounded notch and the business end is crudely shaped to resemble a whale or walrus. American, circa 1800 to 1825. A charming set of five sterling silver teaspoons skillfully crafted by a silversmith or jeweler without a mould for elaborate flatware. Each of the spoons, initialed "PBT" in script and dated "'92" through "'96," are bright-cut engraved with designs to suggest anthemion-crested cast ware. The stem above the bowl is torque-twisted. Marked only "925 sterling 1000." Mint condition. Each approximately 6 inches long. See Trocadero Item #13651 for a similar butter knife.

A charming Napoleon III letter seal of machine-turned bone and chiseled silver, French of around 1870. It is in beautiful condition, with no breaks or cracks. The initials "PG" are carved into the silver bottom, which also bears the hallmarks for France after 1848. Approximately 3-5/8 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in diameter at the top.

This highly decorative shallow bowl, a major product of the Seto kilns, depicts the encounter of a beautiful and elegant Japanese woman and fierce-looking bearded man with some sort of evil intent in mind. Oh, you know the story... Well, frankly I don't, but if I find out, I will write it in. Anyhow, the whole thing is illustrated in elaborate colored enamels and gilt on the finely potted body with a crackled glaze...

Tall and glamorous, this finely crafted glass overlay vase is a real tour de force. The underlying white glass layer lends a varied luster to the turquoise blue, rather like ancient Persian glazes. The tall-necked baluster form of the piece and the intricate palmate and dotted designs enameled on the surface, echo this appeal to Orientalism. There is a hallmark that I have not deciphered, a script letter "A" in an artist's palette. English or Continental, circa 1880...

You might have seen an identical pair of these on the BBC "Antiques Roadshow" a few seasons ago. The expert was viewing a woman's lifelong collection of scissors and scissor-like implements, and these he would not let out his hands! (I wonder if she got them back?) They really are fascinating: you open the chamber to receive the burnt wick, and when you close it, a guillotine rises up and chops off the used part, thus containing it and the acrid smoke...

An unusual example of of Persian metalwork -- possibly crafted in China for the Persian market -- in a graceful form. The widely flared top portion is deeply fluted and bears finely detailed engraving of flowers along its lobated edges. The uneven number of sections indicates that the piece was hand wrought, not cast. The bulbous body, also delicately engraved with floral motifs, has a plain collar above and an ogeed base below...

An intricate fabric printing block from northern India handcarved from rosewood in a design of repeated stylized flowers and borders. A very similar piece is illustrated in Edward Pinto's "Treen and Other Wooden Bygones" as being from Macclesfield, where Indian designs were incorporated onto printed silks. Eighteenth Century or early Nineteenth Century. Excellent condition, with an interesting copper repair to the very end of the interlock design.
