Based on famous Eighteenth Century paintings, these country lovers, a smitten swain and the bashful object of his affection, were created by the famous Paris porcelain factory of Jacob Petit in the rue de Belleville around 1830 and probably were modeled by the sculptor Revenand. Their resplendent costumes, lavishly woven and embroidered, belie the couple’s humble origins: these are no field hand and barefoot housemaid, but a pair of courtiers playing peasants...

A charming bit of rustic handicraft is this small snuff-box made of carefully built-up thin layers of serrated birch bark held in place by many tiny brass nails. Small cut-out circles reveal a surprise of blue underneath, and a trace of shiny brown at the base suggests that it was probably originally bound like that all around the top and bottom in that manner. The original leather thong still forms the handle for the top. Early to mid-Nineteenth Century, probably Tyrolean or Alpine...

Here is a glorious tribute to summer’s warm beauty that will chase the winter blues from any room. By noted French flower painter, Raoul Victor Maurice Maucherat de Longpre, it portrays a freshly gathered bouquet of poppies, daisies, bachelor’s buttons and Queen Anne’s lace gracefully lying on a stone wall, the sort of still-life that the artist was famous for all of his career, which began at the Salon de Paris in 1876...

“Hark, the herald angels sing!” I have always imagined that this German High Renaissance figure of an archangel originally must have held a music book in his missing hands. Even in its deteriorated state, there is a magnificence to the statue’s graceful, liquid form, and fortunately, there is no damage to the carving of the handsome, beatific face. Traces of the original gesso and gilding remain and the piece has been stabilized by the addition of a heavy old marble base...

A sturdy little coffer for storing and heating betel nuts and the lime necessary for chewing them, this fine brass work, approximately 5-1/4 inches by 2-1/2 inches by two inches high, is nicely punched and engraved with designs of trailing foliage and geometric patterns. Raised framing has been filed to suggest rope-work.. It is easy to see how this form influenced the design of early Dutch tobacco boxes. The two metal inside dividers are missing, but the piece retains its push button lock...
