During the Age of Opulence that followed the Civil War, Gorham Manufacturing Company often produced silver that exemplified the over-the-top taste of the day, a mad clash of historical styles that could often fit together somehow. Here, however, is a lovely sterling silver compote in pure classical design, and with a date-mark of 1873...

To expedite the Christian Crusade to "liberate" the Holy Land from the "infidels" gold coins in imitation of the dinar of Caliph al-Amir were minted in fine gold. No city is cited, but they were probably coined in Jerusalum. Ironically, the faulty kufic inscriptions extol the power and and virtues of Mohammad. First phrase, 1100-1131 AD. Approximately 7/8 inch in diameter, 3.92 g.wt. EF condition.

Detailing of jugs of this sort is rarely so fine, but here the artist has attempted life-like shading and veining on the flowers and leaves that adorn both sides of this piece. The whole of the bulbous body is lavish with copper luster, which covers the finely molded rim of grapevines, the fluted lip and the graceful handle. Superb condition. English, circa 1830. The bespectacled character protrayed on this antiques nutcracker could possibly be an old woman, but I choose to think that it Guisseppe, the widower who fashioned his "son" Pinocchio to ease his loneliness. Whichever and whatever, the carving is full of character. Tyrolean or Swiss, late Nineteenth Century, it is in fine condition, with only minor wear and no repairs, and is about eight inches in length and 1-3/4 inches wide and three inches deep.

Purchased over fifty years ago at San Francisco’s taste emporium Gump’s, these massive lamps in the form of reticulated covered urns light up three ways: inside, above or the two in combination. The bodies have a pattern of prunus trees against bamboo leaves. Grand in scale, they are approximately 38 inches in full height and have a wingspan of about 28 inches; the Chinese porcelain urns themselves are around 28 inches tall and 16 inches in diameter...

Over much of the outside are designs of trails of foliage, diaper patterns and stylized leaves on a punched ground. One can imagine the young Werner Scholz (1898-1982) being abraded by the instructor for painting the classroom instead of the nude model! This was before the artist lost his left arm in the First World War, a disaster that did not prevent him from becoming a prime figure in the German Post-Expressionist movement. After the war, the rise of National Socialism caused Scholz to flee his native country for Switzerland, where he continued his work to become an important artist...

The emblem of a Roman matron's social standing, the fibula was the circle pin of its day, and one to be handed down from mother to eldest daughter. In fact, one of the touching things to me is the sign of wear on the back of the piece. This bold example combines Roman solidarity with motifs associated with the Egyptian goddess Hathor. There is fine dark-green patina over all; the pin, almost always missing, has been skillfully replaced with a replica. Approximately 2-3/4 by 3 inches...

This coat of arms is particularly well painted in full colors and gilded highlights. Retaining its original gilt frame and hanging ring is this late Eighteenth Century watercolor and gouache hatchment, an armorial rendering used at a nobleman’s funeral in place of actual armaments. The grain and barrels depicted on this one suggest that they signified a “beer baron," a major new branch of the rich and honored of the early Machine Age...

Wonderfully sturdy but with a delicate air is this lovely chamberstick, French. mid-Eighteenth Century. The base and candle cup are almost identical to Figure C on page 205 of THE BRASS BOOK by Peter, Nancy and Herbert Schiffer (1978, Schiffer Publishing Ltd.), but the shell-decorated handle is pierced and counterbalanced with a finger hold underneath. Excellent condition, approximately 7-1/2 inches long by 3-1/4 inches wide and 1-3/4 inches high.
