A fine example of classic restraint, this solid silver biscuit box was fashioned in Amsterdam in 1881, the tray produced for it in 1919. (Yes, the biscuits are NutterButters, a secret passion...) An elaborate design of fan-like reliefs on the softly domed top of this superb cloisonne box depicts a blue bird resting on a lily and a butterfly about to taste the nectar of a flower, this latter relief with a ground of deep green sparked with "goldstone." Brocade patterns (nishiki-de) decorate the sides. An old label is still inside the lid. Late Nineteenth Century, Japan, 4-3/4 inches by 3-5/8 inches by two inches high.

This is a superb example of bamboo work: a food container from Mindanao Island, Philippine Archipelago. The central body is strengthened by bands of woven rattan that are, in turn, supplemented by finer-woven band forming supports, an elaborate handle and an implement holder. These two extraordinary sterling silver berry servers are fully hallmarked dating them to London, 1742, maker's mark a crowned Gothic C.
