This urn-shaped coquilla nut pounce pot combines fine turning with delicate designs formed by small machine-turned repetitions of varying sorts to produce rosettes, festoons, etc. with a dramatic effect. Possibly English or Continental, maybe scrimshaw of Napoleonic prison-of-war art, it is hard to pinpoint exactly where it was made, but wherever, it was certainly well thought out. Early Nineteenth Century. Mint condition. Approximately 2-5/8 inches high and 1-3/4 inches in diameter.

Bearing the Copenhagen silver standard mark for the year 1887, this elegant small tumbler is decorated with subtly bright-cut engraving of floral branches centering on the name “Ingeborg.” Other mark indicate the maker, “C.Hertz,” and the assay master’s cipher. Excellent condition. Approximately three inches tall and 2-5/8 inches in diameter at the rim.

Very much in the Chinese Export style is this early Nineteenth Century porcelain plate from the Davenport factory. The pure white ground is highlighted by colorful bunches of flowers, and a gilded lambrequin border echoes the gilded rim. The marks are a script “Davenport” and an inventory number, “162.” Mint condition, approximately nine inches in diameter.

This group is so Etruscan that I am certain they are German. The prints are elaborately framed in ebonized wood with gilt mounts and chains, but the extraordinary thing is the laurel-bedecked verre eglomise (painted and gilded glass) mats. They are in superb condition, the full set is about 31-3/4 inches high and 39 inches wide. The larger piece is 16 inches by 39 inches and each of the other two is 13 inches by 19 inches. Approximately 1840.

Probably a love token for an industrious housewife is this elaborately carved folding butter mould. Worked in with the rich swirling floral motifs is the letter ”G,” undoubtedly the lady’s initial Would form a good kilo of butter into an elegant block. An excellent example of the noted French instrument maker, Naudet, Hulot et Companie, is the handsome brass-bound wall unit. Dated circa 1880, it combines a holosteric barometer with two crescent thermometers, Reaumur(Centigrade) and Fehrenheit. The dial is about 6-1/2 inches in diameter, full height with swiveling bezel 8-1/2 inches and depth 2-1/2 inches. Excellent working condition.

A charming Napoleon III letter seal of machine-turned bone and chiseled silver, French of around 1870. It is in beautiful condition, with no breaks or cracks. The initials "PG" are carved into the silver bottom, which also bears the hallmarks for France after 1848. Approximately 3-5/8 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in diameter at the top.

Despite its massive appearance, this gold lapel watch is surprisingly light. The repousse gold face of finely detailed stylized leaves and grapes is mounted on a silver back that incorporates a eye-hook for attaching a small watch. This cigarette box was ordered in the Thirties by a famous Hollywood director; he provided the antique jeweled Tibetan belt buckle to a Hong Kong jeweler to be mounted up in a manner suitable to the piece. The copper box was plated in nickel which very closely matches the tone of the low-grade silver surrounding the agate, carnelian, turquoise and coral antique creation. The buckle is beautifully enhanced by its setting, but is free-standing and can be removed if so desired...

An intricate fabric printing block from northern India handcarved from rosewood in a design of repeated stylized flowers and borders. A very similar piece is illustrated in Edward Pinto's "Treen and Other Wooden Bygones" as being from Macclesfield, where Indian designs were incorporated onto printed silks. Eighteenth Century or early Nineteenth Century. Excellent condition, with an interesting copper repair to the very end of the interlock design.

Picasso made wonderful toys for his children out of found objects; this one by a Native American probably would have delighted him. Fashioned from the jawbone of a caribou and baleen (whalebone}, it is delightfully sculptural. Some wear to the lower points, naturally, but no cracks or breaks. Probably around 1900-1920. Together for more than a century, these mated gourds were used for generations of the same family in Japan. The gentleman's gourd is approximately 14 inches long and the lady's is about 8-1/2. (The latter one has a fine lacquer repair that shows in the close-up photo. The stoppers are carved persimmon wood, the lady's has a brass ring and a bone ring for hanging the two gourds.

This elegant tripod incense burner in fine Kutani porcelain is cylindrical in form and has cloud-form handles with detached rings. The straight-sided walls are reticulated to show the double-wall construction, both sides showing a fortuitous phoenix alighting on a fence. The top is a reticulated double dome. Brilliant glazes of rouge-de-fer, turquoise, blue and mustard are enhanced with fine gilding. Height is approximately four inches and full diameter about 4-1/2 inches...
