Very South-of-the-Border are these two tripod cups which combine design elements of the Old World with Aztec traditions. Shaped rather like braziers, the bodies are topped with a collar of paneled flutes, the feet are like upside-down lion's-paws and an acorn finial drops from below. Marks are the old Mexican spread-wing eagle tax stamp, the maker's mark (?), a purity indication of 900 and "Mexico." Early Twentieth Century. Excellent condition and heavy weight...

A rare example of High Renaissance metal craft is this small oval platter, hand repouss├ęd brass with a heavy coating of silver which was then carefully polished to simulate the real thing, all this in a time when labor was cheap and silver the main expression of status. One of two versions of the this bust of William Shakespeare that we possess (see Trocadero Item #14819) by Enoch Wood (1759 to 1840). In this one he is a brunet with a tan and gray cloak, a rather florid complexion and a gilt locket at his throat. Molded into his back is "Shakespere," I guess so we shouldn't mistake him for Vincent Price. Superb condition with some crackling to the skin tones. English, circa 1800. This is one of two versions of this Enoch Wood (English, 1759 to 1840) bust of the Immortal Bard that we have on hand. (See Trocadero Item #14831) It is amazing what a difference the enameling can make! This model is cloaked in bright leafy green that contrasts nicely with his rather more matte yellow shirt and marbleized plinth. His hair and beard are red and he has eyebrows that would make Joan Crawford sick with envy. English, circa 1800. Mint condition...

An unusual example of of Persian metalwork -- possibly crafted in China for the Persian market -- in a graceful form. The widely flared top portion is deeply fluted and bears finely detailed engraving of flowers along its lobated edges. You might have seen an identical pair of these on the BBC "Antiques Roadshow" a few seasons ago. The expert was viewing a woman's lifelong collection of scissors and scissor-like implements, and these he would not let out his hands! (I wonder if she got them back?) They really are fascinating: you open the chamber to receive the burnt wick, and when you close it, a guillotine rises up and chops off the used part, thus containing it and the acrid smoke. All in close-plated steel, the sleek de...

Tall and glamorous, this finely crafted glass overlay vase is a real tour de force. The underlying white glass layer lends a varied luster to the turquoise blue, rather like ancient Persian glazes. The tall-necked baluster form of the piece and the intricate palmate and dotted designs enameled on the surface, echo this appeal to Orientalism. Stately and subtle, this tall vase exemplifies the virtues that have made Oribe stoneware favored by Japanese tea ceremonial connoisseurs and others for centuries. The emblem of a Roman matron's social standing, the fibula was the circle pin of its day, and one to be handed down from mother to eldest daughter.
