Finely carved with billowing scrolls surrounding the sacred mythical Garuda, half human, half eagle and very powerful and protective. India, late Eighteenth to early Nineteenth Centuries. Excellent, as-found condition. They would make a superb -- and protective -- headboard for a bed. Approximately seven inches by 27 inches by 1-1/2 inches in depth.

Carved upright carved shaped like cricket bats and lashed onto crossed elements at either end serve as legs on this rack, which could be placed on the camel to load him up even more. Then, at safari's destination, the rig was placed in the tent, a top placed on top, to become a service table. Very practical! (For everyone but the poor camel...) Madagascar, circa 1900. This was before the artist lost his left arm in the First World War, a disaster that did not prevent him from becoming a prime figure in the German Post-Expressionist movement. The Little Corporal's boots, reinterpreted as table-match holders, stand by his boot-jack, which serves as striker. This finely crafted porcelain fantasy, probably French, is approximately 4/12 inches tall on a plinth about 4 inches by three inches. Condition is excellent, with only minor wear to the gilding at the top of the plinth, and a small under-glaze chip at the base.

Here is a fine pale-celadon vase with an elegant Buddhist lion (shi-shi)painted in underglaze blue, frolicking in clouds. Dating from the latter half of the Nineteenth Century, it is in excellent condition and measures approximately 9-3/4 inches tall and 4-1/2 inches in diameter at the widest point.

All ready for tiffin in the Veldt is this remarkable collapsible campaign table, 26.5 high when open. Formed of many slats strung together by inset brass bands, the top springs together to form a tube for containing the iron-bound folding base, with attached beechwood bars that slide on to lock the top securely. The table can be set up in a matter of seconds and then quickly closed. English or American, 1870 to 1890.

This sort of bouquetiere or pique-fleurs mural (cut-flower vase) was designed to stand close to the wall, or close to a mirror, in which its flowers would appear doubled. It was made in Moustiers, France, probably at Fouque factory (cf: Nouveau Tardy, Faiences de Moustier, page 98, fig. 185) in the third quarter of the Eighteenth Century.
