| Called a "spider" in its day, this sort of tripod wrought-iron pan was suitable for cooking directly in the hearth or on an open fire. It was light for carrying on military and other excursions and the long handle kept the business end far away enough from the fire to protect the cook. This excellent example is particularly graceful and animal-like, and its hanging end says that it was made with love. Approximately 20 inches long and 10-1/2 inches high with a pan about 8-1/4 inches in diameter. Pennsylvania provenance, Eighteenth Century. Superb, usable condition. | |||||||||
