Made for export around 1870, this 11-piece dressing set, in its original lacquer fitted case, is of extraordinary purity (approximately 950/1000) and weight, the powder box alone weighing in at about 11 ounces. Featuring finely martèle surfaces within plain borders, the decoration is elegantly reserved. Each of the brushes two hair brushes, a clothes brush and a hat brush retains its original silk-brocade cartonnage bandeau, and packing papers bear the advertising of the maker, Hung Chong and Company, Shanghai. There are also a hand mirror, a silver-mounted ivory comb, glove stretchers, a button hook, a shoe horn, a powder box with vermeil interior and a velvet-lined jewel box. The condition is superb, almost if the set was never used.
