| This was sold to me in Paris long ago as ivory, and so fine is the grain that it looks like it. It is a needlecase probably made by a prisoner of the Napoleonic War aboard a prison ship in England, where a popular pasttime and business was making objects out of what they could lay their hands on: bone, ivory, gold coins, silver, coconut shells, etc. The fronds and draperies suggested in the carefully cut reticulations of the body of this piece are enhanced by the fluted band that also gives a good grip to the screw-on top section. Original pink silk lining offers a bit of bright contrast. A single bone bodkin is included as lagniappe. Condition is mainly excellent, with only one small rib missing at the top, almost unnoticeable. Circa 1800. Approximately 5-1/8 inches by 7/8 of an inch in diameter. | |||||
