Early Philadelphia Silver Mug By J E Caldwell
This fine mug bears the early hallmark of Philadelphia’s “James E Caldwell & Co.,” dating it to around 1850. It shares a close stylistic appearance to a slightly earlier cup in our collection, Trocadero # 21176, as well a history of descending in the family of Nicholas Biddle, founder of the Bank of the United States and builder of Classical masterpiece, Andalusia. The Rococo ogee upper rim and handle are echoed in the repousse frontal cartouche surrounding the monogram, “EWB.” The height is approximately 3-3/4 inches and the width 4-3/4 inches at the handle. Condition: superb.
