| This extraordinarily fine miniature on copper, the finest I have owned, is of a handsome bearded man, probably French, and dates from around 1600. The exquisite details of the features, the lace-trimmed blouse, the draperies and landscape in the background, all rendered in brilliant colors, give the portrait a jewel-like quality, further emphasized by its wildly fanciful frame, a wreath of silver-foil flowers and foliage. Around 2-3/8 inches by 1-3/4 inches, the painting’s frame is roughly 10 inches by seven inches. This tour-de-force is sensitively displayed in a glazed antique shadowbox of ebonized and gilt wood lined in antique blue velvet, the overall size of which is about fifteen inches by eleven inches and approximately 2-1/4 inches deep. | |||||||||||
