The creator of this amusing seat probably never saw a Seventeenth Century Burgundian salt stool, but this item delightfully resembles one! Probably designed as a close stool to house the chamber pot, it is made of redwood and displays some of the elements of the earlier form and bears traces of early gold paint. The interior hinges have been replaced and the top is covered in a handwoven antique textile of naturally dyed stripes . A truly charming example of primitive furniture. American, probably third quarter of the Nineteenth Century; approximately 16 inches by 14 inches by 17-1/2 inches high.
