TITLE: Sarcophagus mask CULTURE: Ancient Egypt PERIOD: Late Period, 664 - 323 BC MATERIAL: Wood, stucco and pigments. DIMENSIONS: Height 16 cm. REF: 20141589 PRICE: 2,900 euros PROVENANCE: Private collection M.D., France, acquired between 1965 - 1970. CONDITION: In good state of preservation. With some faults in the polychromy. DESCRIPTION: Egyptian mask in wood with serene expression painted in earth red color, decorated in black marking the eyes and eyebrows. On the back and on both sides, we can see the dowels and holes through which the mask was attached to the sarcophagus. In mythological use the funerary mask was a basic part of the grave goods as it represented the face of the deceased. It had a sense similar to that of the statues of Ka or the reserve heads of the Old Kingdom. The idea was that if the mummy underwent any misadventure, the Ba of the dead, the spirit, that came out of the body each day to "live" in the Other World, would be able to recognize the body on returning.
