This 19th century ivory carving of a young woman wearing a straw hat and holding a fish is 11” high (13 1/2” high with hardwood base), 2 ¾” wide and 2” thick. This young woman is the central figure in a well-known Chinese opera called “The Fisherman’s Revenge” (Da Yu Sha Jia). This very well carved Chinese export ivory jewelry box is a mid or late 19th century product. Three dragons surrounded by lucky clouds are carved into the top of the box. Two dragons appear on the front of the box and one on the rear. There is a mirror and removable tray inside the jewelry box. The tray and bottom of the box are lined with dark blue velvet. This very well carved ivory statue of a scholar is a late 19th century product. It is 11" high (with hardwood carved base, it is 13" high), 3 1/2" wide and 2 1/2" thick. The image is the well-known Song Dynasty (960AD~1270AD) hermit scholar Lin Pu (林 逋). Li Pu (967AD~1028AD) was born in Hang Zhou City, Zhe Jiang. When he was young he traveled a lot. This pair of carved ivory seals is an early 20th century product. They are 1 7/16” high and 1” square. They are carved as a pair of reclining lions (or Foo dogs) holding globes. Seals such as these are called “phrase seals.” Usually seals are for names, dates, collections or phrases; phrase seals are the most interesting. This early 20th century ivory carving of a maiden is 15 7/8” high (17 ½” with base), 3 ½” wide and 2 7/8” thick. She wears a simple and elegant robe and holds a bouquet of flowers in front of her. The carving is superb and has nice patina. The wood base is a later made piece. Aside from some small hair line cracks due to its age, the statue is in great condition.
