This very finely shaped and fired Shigaraki style katakuchi (open topped sake pourer) was made by Furutani Kazuya (b.1976) who is the eldest son of the noted Shigaraki and Iga potter, Furutani Michio. Michio was noted for building over 30 kilns during his lifetime and was celebrated for being one of the potters who helped renew the popularity of the Shigaraki style. This very finely potted gourd shaped Seto ware tea jar has a very attractive glaze. It was made within the last 20-40 years and comes in a silk shifuku bag and wood and cardboard box. It is 3 Ό” high and 2 Ό” from the widest part. The lid is made of ivory and gold leaf underneath. This piece is much more attractive than most of the Seto wares offered. The fine white ash glazed tea caddy with cast bronze lid was made by the very popular Japanese potter Ishii Takahiro. He apprenticed with Kakurzaki Ryuichi, one of the most sought after contemporary Bizen artist-potters. Ishii's exhibitions are quite often sellouts due to the quality of his work. It is 4 3/8” high and 3” in diameter. The artist’s signature is on the top of the original wood box. It is in excellent condition.
