This superb ivory carving of Guan Yin is an early 20th century product. It is 12 ¼” high (wood base is not included), 2 ¾” wide (from bottom) and 2 1/8” thick (from bottom). It depicts Guan Yin (goddess of mercy) holding a young child. The laughing child carries a lotus blossom and leaf. Guan Yin is riding on the back of a carp with a dragon head surrounded by waves and lotus. According to Chinese legend, Guan Yin always shows different faces or offers multiple functions to comfort us. In this image, the goddess is called Songzi or Daizi (the child giver) Guan Yin. Usually, young married women will worship this special Guan Yin in the hope they will become pregnant and have a child soon. There is no makers’ mark or date; the numbers 29107 are etched on the bottom. It has very nice patina all over the statue and is in great condition.
