This pair of carved ivory seals is an early 20th century product. They are 1 7/16” high and 1” square. They are carved as a pair of reclining lions (or Foo dogs) holding globes. Seals such as these are called “phrase seals.” Usually seals are for names, dates, collections or phrases; phrase seals are the most interesting. The four characters on one seal reads “Resting on a couch, (I am) watching the cloud.” The other one reads “Leaning on the window, (I am) listening to the rain drops.” Aside from some small hair line cracks due to their age, they are in great condition.
