About the gallery :
The Banyan Photo Gallery specializes in historic photography about Asia. It provides mainly original 19th -early 20th century photographs from China, Japan, India, and South-East Asia with an emphasis on ethnographic images (street life, portraits), architectural views and war photography. The gallery offers a large choice of photographic processes ranging from albumen prints to gelatin silver prints through stereoscopic views in carefully described conditions along with historical documentation if any. Browsing the collection will give you a rare opportunity to get a glimpse of Asia in the old times back up to the middle of the 19th century.
These photographs, whether signed or from still unidentified photographers are mainly original vintage prints (printed at the time or shortly after shooting).
We also provide high quality limited editions of classic images reprinted from the original glass plates. Keeping up with the active research field on the subject, the gallery aims to promote the work of pioneering nineteenth and early twentieth century photographers through the diffusion of iconic or lesser known images from the original source.
