Pair Antique Persian Gilded Story Paintings Will Henri

Pair of small, exquisite, mixed media on paper, Orientalist Story Paintings. Each has a name on the verso, along with writings in the artist's language; one signed "Will Henry," and the other indicates an alternate spelling may be "Will Henri." Paintings were partially drawn in graphite, overpainted in watercolor, gouache, and gilt.

The story is not known, but we can only surmise that the first painting, indicates an elder gentleman happening upon two young girls, who appear to have been drinking perhaps an alcoholic beverage from a lovely porcelain vessel which is upon the ground. The bottle is decorated with a phoenix, which in some Eastern mythologies is a symbol of Royalty.

The second, smaller painting, shows this same gentleman, in different clothing, disheveled, distraught, and breaking beautiful, fine porcelain vessels upon the ground. Is the gentleman a potter, perhaps, and showing remorse at perhaps the young girls of royalty having drunk alcohol from one of his containers? We do not know, but translating the notes on the verso may be clues to the story.

The larger, left image is 6.5" x 9" (16.51 x 22.86 cm), framed to 11" x 13.75" x .50" (27.94 x 34.92 x 1.27 cm); the smaller, right image is 5.75" x 8.5" (14.60 x 21.59 cm), framed to 10.75" x 13.25" x .50" (27.30 x 33.65 x 1.27 cm). The paper is handmade, and we date it to the 19th Century. Both paintings are in excellent condition. $22 US Shipping.
