Sizeable, Gorgeous figurine marked "Exposition De Paris, 1878," with a hand-incised large "EX," and a green underglaze anchor mark, the top cross-bar of which has a Roman Numeral "II" on the left side, and "III" on the right side. A statue of Aphrodite of Melos, also known as Venus de Milo, Goddess of love and beauty, is on the right, complete with her traditional symbols of Doves and Myrtle. It appears that a "woman in love" is whispering into the ear of the Aphrodite, probably asking for her help in matters of the heart. The young woman has styled her hair the same as the Goddess, and wears a lovely flowing gown with tiny details overall. Note the detail even to her delicate toes. A bare self-plaque appears on the front, and we do not know if it once contained a title or not; there are no remnants of such if so. 14" (35.56 cm) tall, with base at 7" x 5-1/2" (17.78 x 13.97 cm). This show piece is in great condition, with quite a bit of loss to the gilding (easily replaced by a professional), and one small flake on the underside, inside rim, pictured. Large and heavy, requiring special secure, double packaging. $28 US Shipping. |
