Extremely fine oil painting; exquisite portrait of a beautiful young woman, in a handmade, hand-gilded frame. Some minor craquelure is noted, as well as one tiny flake under her chin. We believe this portrait has been cut from and rescued from a larger painting which was probably damaged. Painted on canvas, it appears to have been stabilized, quite sometime ago, by being mounted upon two layers of artist board, with no further restoration appearing to be required. There is one tiny flake under her chin which has been caused by coming into contact with a sharp object, rather than typical "flaking" from dryness; all other areas of the painting are intact and stable. The custom-made and hand-painted frame has lost a few small chips of the black enamel. We recommend those spots be repaired, and a coat of clear varnish be applied to the frame to prevent further loss. This is an exceptionally fine work of art, of a beautiful young subject, undoubtedly by a major artist of the period. There is no signature or indication of artist whatsoever; and our efforts to locate an image of what we believe was a "larger painting" have been unsuccessful. Image is 8.5" x 11.5" (21.59 x 29.21 cm), framed to 13" x 16" (33.02 x 40.64 cm). Excellent condition, with minor imperfections noted above. We suggest this is of French origin. c. 1860-1900. $35 US Shipping. |
