Underglaze polychrome enameling in a delicate floral pattern, differing slightly on each stick. Black underglaze mark with the company logo, the initials "G" and "K" on either side within the logo, and "Made in Austria," "Handmalere" for Handpainted. They measure 9" tall (22.86 cm), about 5.25" (13.33 cm) diameter of the foliate base, 2.75" (6.98 cm) diameter foliate rim, 1" (2.54 cm) diameter candle opening. Both sticks in excellent condition. c. 1920-1940. $20 US Shipping. Gmundner Keramik History: As near as we can determine, the manufacturer has been in existence in Austria since 1829 when it was founded by a family by the name of Schleiss, or Schleib. It is believed that Leopold Schleib (1853-1910) took over the running of the company from his father in 1887, eventually establishing it as an art pottery company in 1903. This date would come close to agreeing with a Kovel's reference showing the company in existence from 1909-1922. After Leopold's death in 1910, his wife, Emilie, ran the company, although we do not know for what term. There is a modern company by this same name which produces a nice line of fine ceramics in Austria which we assume is the same company, although we do not know the company's lineage between today and Kovel's date of 1922. Auf Deutsch: Frühe Steingut-Kerzenhalter Gmundner Keramik Österreich. |
