Rare German Wood Mosaic Johann-Adelhard 1850-1927
Extremely rare late 19th Century wood Marquetry panel by furniture mosaic artist, Johann-Adelhard (1850-1927), Nuremberg, Germany. The panel contains over 10,000 tiny pieces of differing, natural woods, hand-cut and hand-set to form a picturesque scene of Old Nuremberg called "Hangman's Bridge," or "Henkersteg." The blues and greens seen as sky, water, and foliage accents, are the only exceptions to the natural wood colors. These panels were created to be displayed in cabinetry items, and grouped within wall panels.

A darkened arch may be seen in the sky area of the panel indicating the shape of framing in which it was originally set. Thickness of the panel is about .50" (1.27 cm), and the overall size is about 12" x 14" (30.48 x 35.56 cm), in a 21st Century frame measuring 18.5" x 21" x 2" (46.99 x 53.34 x 5.08 cm). The panel has a slight warp to it, but fits well in the frame, and is well secured. A piece of the mosaic is missing from a church spire in the right-hand area, and there may be some restoration along the left-hand rooftops, although it might also be original treetops and foliage. The piece is in remarkably good condition, and has significant value and appeal as a 19th Century decorative furniture accessory. Verso text has been translated into English in the last photo. It is signed with the artist's stylized monogram in the lower right corner. Scuffs to the panel appropriate to age. c. 1895-1910. $45 US Shipping.
