Paul Rene Gauguin, Doc Rune Strand, Pam Marker, Lord Queensberry, E. Garaud, Elaine Bscheider..... We are very pleased to be able to offer a complete set of eight, one of every piece produced in Stromberg's Mid-20th Century, Famous Artist Series of Hand-Engraved Art Glass Tankards. In the 1960s, following the death of her husband, Asta Stromberg ran the highly regarded, Strombergshyttan Glass Company, in Sweden. During that time, she began a superb limited edition, "famous artist series," issuing one blue-crystal Tankard per year, onto which a unique, original modern design, created by the selected artist for that year, was deeply hand-engraved into the thick crystal. The base of each mug is well signed, and indicates the artist, the company director, and the piece number. Early mugs were limited to only 1,000 pieces, and at least one, 1971, the Peace Dove (or eagle?) apparently exceeded 1,000. The series Tankards began in 1968, ending with 1975. In 1976, the factory burned and was permanently closed. Although all of the artists were well known, one series artist, in particular, stands out, Gauguin. Paul Rene Gauguin (1911-1976) Copenhagen, who created the symbol for the 1970 Tankard, was the grandson of Eugene Henri Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), the renowned post-impressionist artist. Paul Rene Gauguin was also a highly-regarded, well-recognized artist in his own right, and his works are displayed in museums around the world. All artists and tankards in the series, are listed below. Back Row, left-to-right: Center Row, left-to-right: Front Row, left-to-right: $50 US Shipping. |
