Rare find in this glazed terra-cotta piece created during the early years of the factory of Rasmus Peter Ipsen (1815-1860), with the mark of 1850-1870. C Skrękkelig Hus Bas - Lettelse Plaque af Peter Ipsen. Ipsen was a master thrower and opened his factory in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1843. Many great designers created works for the factory over the years, including Georg Jensen, Christian Joachim, Axel Salto, and others. During the USA's Centennial Celebration, in 1876, the Ipsen factory maintained an exhibit space at the Philadelphia Exhibition, in America, displaying the full variety of their artistic creations. The Neo-Classical, bas-relief plaque is of a winged female figure carrying two infants, her mascot being an accompanying owl. She is possibly the Goddess Athena, or Goddess Nike. Holes in the top rim of the plaque are for a cord if hanging is desired. The relief measures 5" (12.70 cm) diameter, and just over .25" (.635 cm) thick. "P. Ipsen" impressed on verso. The glaze is wearing thin on some areas of the rim, so that the red of the terra-cotta is becoming barely visible. A lovely piece in excellent condition. c. 1850-1870. $12 US Shipping.
