Vintage Spillman Carousel Horse
SOLD

Carved wooden carousel horse. Circa 1920. Spillman Engineering Company of North Tonawanda, NY. Outside row, tucked head jumper. Carved mane and tail. Secondary carving of large flower on shoulder. Park paint. Approximate dimensions: 57" long x 44" high, 39" chest to rump.

A charming example of the "Country Fair" style of horse. These simple, stylized ponies were designed for portable carousels, which Spillman produced for rural fairs and traveling carnivals. The company was one of four, which operated in North Tonawanda. Armitage Herschell was founded in 1893; Herschell-Spillman Company in 1901; and the Allan Herschell Company in 1915. Spillman Engineering was in operation from the 1920s to the 1930s.
