Machine Age Chrome McKay Magazine Rack
SOLD

McKaycraft metal magazine rack. Circa 1930. John Waring Carpenter for The McKay Company of Pittsburgh, PA. Black coil with chromium ends supported by blue ribbed steel legs on inward scrolled feet, braced by two black metal stretchers. Some pitting to chrome plating and loss of paint on stretchers consistent with age. Approximate dimensions: 22" long x 10" wide x 11" high.

From the McKaycraft line of metal furniture exhibited at the 1933-34, "Century of Progress", Chicago World's Fair. Examples of the McKay magazine rack are featured in the permanent collections of The Wolfsonian, The Baltimore Museum of Art, and The Minneapolis Institute of the Arts.

Listed as accessory item #171 in the company's 1933 B catalog, this model had chromium plated ends. The #181 version was available with enamel ends and 5 color options: black, red, blue, green or orange. The same color options were available on both models for the ribbing of the steel legs. The coil was available in black only.
