The author, Yigael Yadin (20 March 1917 – 28 June 1984), was a Professor of Archaeology at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem and a Major-General of the Israel Defense Forces. He led the exploration of the caves where the Bar-Kochba documents were discovered from 1960-1 as well as the excavations at Masada from 1963-5. Throughout his career he received many accolades and was a distinguished member of the archaeological community. It is therefore no surprise that his work is still pertinent 30 years after his death.
