Heraclius was emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 610-641 CE after he and his father, Heraclius the Elder, overthrew Emperor Phocus. His reign is generally remembered as a prosperous one in which the empire was expanded. Most notably he was responsible for changing the official language of the Eastern Empire, as Byzantium was then called from Latin to Greek in 620 CE.
