This excellent lot includes a variety of coins from a dynamic period in the history of the Holy Land and highlights the multicultural nature of the region. During this period coins were issued under a variety of rulers including the Jewish Hasmonean dynasty, Roman procurators (governors from Rome) and the client king Herod the Great. This period also saw the first Jewish revolt against Rome which resulted in its own unique coinage. All of these various influences are represented in this collection and constitute a great educational lot for anyone interested in the history of the Holy Land, biblical or Jewish history.
Obverse: Various obverses, including but not limited to, the fringed canopy of Herod the Great, the double cornucopia and the inverted anchor of the Hasmoneans, the two handled amphora of the First Jewish Revolt and various inscriptions.
Reverse: Various reverses, including but not limited to, barley ears, the palm branch of Porcius Festus, an eight-rayed star, a vine leaf on tendril (also of the First Jewish revolt), and various inscriptions.
