Stern, Marianne, “Roman, Byzantine, and Early Medieval Glass, 10 BCE - 700 CE, Ernesto Wolf Collection”, (Ostfildern-Ruit, 2001)
Produced in Syro-Palestine, it is suggested by Stern that these vessels were made as amulets for Early Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land and were then disseminated throughout Europe when they returned home. These examples, however, remained in their place of origin where they were to be found over a millennium later.
