Daphna Ben-Tor, “The Scarab: A Reflection of Ancient Egypt” (Jerusalem:1993) pg. 28-33.
Scarabs of this type can be dated from the Early Middle Kingdom to the end of the Second Intermediate Period and have been found in numerous locations in Egypt and modern Palestine.
The hieroglyphs on this scarab attest to its amuletic properties while the coiled cord design may have added to the amuletic value of the scarab or may have been chosen purely for aesthetic reasons.
